PETITION SFSU College Of Ethnic Studies

to: President Leslie E. Wong and Provost Vice President of Academic Affairs Sue Rosser

The proposed cuts to 40 percent of the COES budget will wipe out COES support for faculty hiring, research, and modest student resources that have survived a decade of systematic gutting.

These cuts will also impact students enrollment in COES classes and student’s ability to graduate in a timely manner. With a full and expanded budget allocation, not only will this enrich the community of San Francisco State University, but we hope to set an example for public schools, colleges, and universities in all of the United States.

Personally, ethnic studies, as a whole, has taught me that underrepresented cultures in our society matter as much as the biggest one. Ethnic study courses have taught that my ancestors and my Raza helped create this country. If it wasn’t for ethnic studies, I would not have known what it really means to be a Latino male in higher education.

I am deeply saddened to hear that Ethnic Studies is on the budget chopping block. I pray the administration changes its mind. As an alum of the Black Studies Department, the education I received was invaluable to my personal growth, my sense of self, and my confidence to to pursue any goal I set my mind to. Seeing yourself reflected in a positive way as a contributor to history and society was priceless. Please do not cut funding to the college of Ethnic Studies.

SF State was the first college with ethnic studies in 1968. People need it more now than ever before! We need to see more support for it, it changed my life and many others. It has the ability to influence all people for the better and impact our society in a positive way .
